The Rules (Project Paper Doll, #1) - ARC Review

The Rules (Project Paper Doll, #1)
by Stacey Kade

1. Never trust anyone.

2. Remember they are always searching.

3. Don’t get involved.

4. Keep your head down.

5. Don’t fall in love.

Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”

But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules…

My Review
Ariane Tucker has lived her life following five rules set by he adoptive father. She has followed them since the night he save her from a genetics lab. A lab she was created in using human and extraterrestrial DNA and forced to do horrible things even as a child. She mainly wants to be human and goes to school staying quiet so as not to arouse suspicion. She does this to keep her adoptive father and her self safe. That all changes when she steps in to help her only friend. It puts her in the eye of the in crowd which includes Zane the police chiefs son. He makes plans with her to get back at the bullies. The problem with the plan is it makes her break the rules she has lived by and puts a spotlight on her when she should be hiding.

Ariane is not the typical oh she is so beautiful girl that everyone wants or wants to be. She has plainer looks, that if you look at long enough or hard enough you notice odd things. She seems quiet at first she only has one friend. The more you read the more you see different sides of her. She has anger problems, is loyal to her friend, smart and so much more. I don't think we have seen all there is to her yet. I like how even tho she should be quiet and stay invisible she does stand up to bullies for her friend. Zane is supposed to be Mr. Popular but it isn't the life he wants. He has so much more going on in his life but everyone sees him as the one who has it all. I really liked him because he sees inside Ariane and what she really is. Well not everything she is but her heart and personality wise he does. Jenna is Ariane's best and only friend. i didn't care for her at all. From the get go all she wants is to fit in with the cool crowd. She seems very selfish to me. Rachel is the cool crowd queen. She wants everyone to do what see says and uses everyone she can. This is the mean girl from hell as you will see when you read this book.

I wanted to read this book as soon as I heard about it. It sounded so fascinating. The first part of the book really lets you in on what type of life Ariane and Zane live. At first this book seemed like it was just going to be a typical high school book full of backstabbing and catfights. You do get some flashes of what Ariane works so hard to hide. You get to see how Zane and Ariane fight their feelings for each other while trying to pay back those that hurt them or used them. For a while I was worried this book was going to fall right in the middle for me. Then it picked up and I really got into it starting with a party that gave me a Carrie flashback. That was my favorite scene in the book. As you get to see into the labs and just what people want from Ariane and what she can do it really turned the book around for me. You never know who to trust or what is going to happen next as Ariane is face with heart breaking betrayal that i did not see coming. The book is told from Adriane and Zane's POV so you get to see inside both of their heads. I probally would have gave this book a five but I wanted more alieness. Yes I know that isn't a word but it works for this book. I look forward to more in this series to see what Ariane does next and hopefully more about hopefully who her DNA comes from. This is a great book all around.

I would like to thank the publisher Disney- Hyperion for a copy of this book for an honest review.
